HSS Connection Design Software
STI Technical Consultant Mike Manor, PE, MLSE discusses when turning to computer software might be the best option for designing HSS connections. With trusted software options at your fingertips, you can focus on the engineering task at hand. Read on to find out which software solutions may fit your needs.
Connection Design: Using Software Tools and Human Imagination to Build Better
We spoke with Jason McCool, project engineer at Robbins Engineering Consultants. Read on for his helpful tips to overcome challenges in HSS connection design, for thoughtful use of connection software programs, and the importance of considering connections during the design of HSS structures.
HSS members can be used for many different applications, but they are often seen in tube-to-tube configurations such as trusses, wind girts and braces. These uses, however, can result in unique design considerations. Join us December 1 at 11:00 a.m. CST where we will demonstrate how to determine applicable limit states, evaluate detailing options for HSS beams, and discuss special considerations for laterally offset connections and how to translate calculation results to details.
Join us December 15 at 11:00 a.m. CST for this insightful webinar that covers various basic theories dealing with yield lines. We'll also discuss how to adopt the basic yield line mechanism to solve complicated problems as well as an analysis of concentrated loads on HSS in tubular joints.
In the new AISC 360-16 Specification, there are significant changes to Chapter K. We have created Limit State Tables to help designers navigate these changes. Feel free to download them and reach out to our technical team if you have any questions or comments.
HSS Connex is a web-based tool that offers designers a simple way to check HSS wall thicknesses to aid in efficient HSS connection design. The tool performs limit state checks at HSS walls and is great for determining whether reinforcing will be required. HSS Connex is available for HSS Professional Members, but STI is now offering a 30-day free trial.
Webinar On Demand: Connection Design Software for HSS
Providing proper connection design is critical not only to a structure's overall performance but also to its cost-effective construction. This free webinar recording covers current, commercially available software for performing HSS connection design, common software design capabilities and limitations, and considerations to help minimize costly connections.
There's a push for the building industry to reduce embodied carbon and greenhouse gas emissions to slow global warming effects. This is evident in the passing of the Buy Clean California Act (BCCA) requiring projects entering contracts with the state to use materials that fall under maximum embodied carbon thresholds. For any designers or material suppliers, it's prudent to learn more about embodied carbon in building materials.
Architecture Firm Billings End the Summer On a Strong Note
Architecture firms continued to report strong business conditions in September. The ABI score rose by a point from August to 56.6 — one of the higher scores seen this year. The ABI scores over the last eight months continue to be among the highest ever seen in the immediate post-recession periods that have been captured throughout the index's history.
The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that in August, U.S. steel mills shipped 8,404,858 net tons — a 28.7% increase from the 6,532,652 net tons shipped in August 2020. In August 2021, shipments were up 1.5% from the 8,278,863 net tons shipped in the previous month.
