Dr. Jeffrey Packer discusses AISC 360-16 Section B3.13 (AISC, 2016) and notes that the corrosion of steel components must be addressed, especially where corrosion could impair the strength or serviceability of a structure. Hot-dip galvanizing currently represents one of the most effective and economical methods for protecting steel components against corrosion. Read this article to learn about the impact of hot-dip galvanizing on HSS members and detailing considerations to be aware of.
A Deep Dive Into the Corrosion Prevention Capabilities of Hot-Dip Galvanizing
Alana Fossa, senior corrosion engineer with the American Galvanizers Association, discusses the necessity and process behind hot-dip galvanizing and its impact on HSS members. Find out how this solution for corrosion prevention differs from other methods like paint and metalizing and why the environment of your structure matters more than anything.
Join us December 15 at 11:00 a.m. CST for this insightful, live webinar that covers various basic theories dealing with yield lines. We'll also discuss how to adopt the basic yield line mechanism to solve complicated problems as well as an analysis of concentrated loads on HSS in tubular joints.
This free webinar recording educates architects, engineers and others about successful specification, design, inspection and coating of hot-dip galvanized steel. You'll learn the reasons for hot-dip galvanizing and the batch hot-dip galvanizing process and how to identify best design practices for HSS to be galvanized. It also covers the steel chemistry when it comes to galvanizing as it pertains to ASTM A500 and A1085.
With freezing temperatures, the Steel Tube Institute (STI) has received a few calls pertaining to water-filled HSS sections that have frozen and been damaged from the water expanding. STI recommends specifying a small weep hole at the base of the member (or underside if it's a horizontal member) in addition to closing the section with cap and base plates. This small weep hole will allow any moisture that enters the section during construction or service to have a path out. If the member is galvanized, this weep hole can do double duty as a vent hole for the galvanizing process.
Many architects turn to batch hot-dip galvanized architecturally exposed structural steel (AESS) to create artistic, durable and sustainable showcase elements with a modern, industrial aesthetic. The intent of this publication is to provide best design practices to maximize the hot-dip Galvanizing appearance for AESS projects. The guide is 16 pages and contains a table matrix guide and high-resolution sample photos.
HSS Connex is a web-based tool that offers designers a simple way to check HSS wall thicknesses to aid in efficient HSS connection design. The tool performs limit state checks at HSS walls and is great for determining whether reinforcing will be required. HSS Connex is available for HSS Professional Members, but STI is now offering a 30-day free trial.
AGA Announces New 5-Part Video Series on Appearance of Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Coatings
In this 5-part video series, the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) shows steel samples throughout the fabrication and hot-dip galvanizing process to demonstrate variations in coating appearance. Viewers will learn the causes behind differences in appearance as well as the factors that contribute to the final look of the steel. Key takeaways include best practices for selecting steel and achieving the desired aesthetic.
Business Conditions at Architecture Firms Remain Strong
The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score of 54.3 means that business conditions remain generally strong and that most architecture firms are still seeing billings growth. In addition, inquiries and the value of new design contracts, both indicators of future work at firms, strengthened in October.
The American Iron and Steel Institute reported today that for the month of September 2021, U.S. steel mills shipped 8,085,384 net tons — a 21.3% increase from the 6,662,904 net tons shipped in September 2020. Shipments were down 3.8% from the 8,404,858 net tons shipped in the previous month of August 2021.
