Gondor to Dubai: Chainmail as a Structural Solution
december 1
During the Iron Age (1200-300 BCE), nobility and royalty as well as their protectors began wearing shirts of interwoven metal rings to protect themselves. Known as chainmail, this technological improvement vastly improved the wearer's chances of surviving a blow from a sharpened weapon. The earliest versions of chainmail were formed when leather or cloth shirts had overlapping rings of iron sewn onto them, but by the 10th century smiths were fashioning divided chainmail suits that covered the head, neck, and torso while also facilitating use from horseback. In addition, improvements in industrial practices meant that chainmail was cheaper and easier to produce, meaning that it was no longer exclusively for nobility and their protectors. READ MORE...
Modular Bridging Solutions
DECEMBER 1
Category 4 Hurricanes Eta and Iota made landfall in Central America within two weeks of each other, causing severe flooding and damage to the countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Honduras was particularly affected by these hurricanes. The back-to-back storms destroyed agricultural plantations, thousands of homes, and much of the country's infrastructure. Landslides and flooding caused damage to or completely destroyed many roads and bridges in Honduras. This devastating event motivated international modular bridging specialists, Acrow, to help rebuild what was destroyed.READ MORE...

Rebuilding an Underfunded Community in Houston
DECEMBER 1
In Fall of 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas and Louisiana to devastating effect. The storm, and the catastrophic flooding that followed, had lasting effects on the city of Houston and its surrounding communities. Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston's infrastructure, especially in the underfunded communities that surround the city's downtown. One of the areas hit hardest by the storm was the Harris County Municipal Utility District 148 (HC MUD 148), which is located 13 miles from downtown Houston.READ MORE...
There's never been a more exciting – or challenging – time to be part of this industry. We've witnessed significant disruption across all sectors of construction, which has added tremendous complexity to both below and above ground projects. Although the ripple effects of 2020's global shutdowns will continue through the coming year, knowing how to anticipate and navigate these challenges will help minimize their impact on customers. Fortunately, several key industry-shaping technology trends for 2022 will enable engineers to make strategic shifts and help push jobs forward. READ MORE...

Join CHANCE® for a two-part webinar to learn how extreme events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, storm surges, hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters often cause substantial damage to the foundation of existing structures that requires rapid response for repair. In some areas, recurring events produce repeating damage to traditional foundations of lightly loaded residential and commercial structures. Learn why helical piles are an attractive engineered solution that can be used to provide rapid high capacity load bearing characteristics in most geologic settings for both new foundations and remedial repair. watch the replay!
