Restoring a Monument and Sparking Conversation

The Robert Goud Shaw and Massachusetts 54th Regiment Memorial is located in America's first public park: the Boston Common.  The Memorial honors the first Black soldiers to fight for the North in the Civil War.  Despite public opposition, members of the 54th Regiment performed heroic deeds at the Battle of Fort Wagner in South Carolina, inspiring over 200,000 Black soldiers to enlist in the Union cause. READ MORE...

BelgardĀ® Diamond Pro Segmental Wall Systems Address Geological, Aesthetic Concerns in Creating Nearly 100 Buildable Acres for Prime Housing in California

California-based developers Baldwin & Sons began the design and development of a housing complex on 99 acres of land in the city of Lake Forest, at the base of the Santa Ana Mountains, in 2014. About two-thirds complete, the 931-unit development, The Oaks at Portola Hills, is comprised of seven neighborhoods of both single-family and multi-family residences. Planning for Climate Change– Getting Ahead of Coming Infrastructure Growth

As the AEC industry plans for the future, there is a question that still needs to be answered: how can we plan our infrastructure growth to protect our natural resources from climate change?  One sector working on this issue is environmental regulation.  However, as experts work to solve climate change-related issues, environmental regulation and the larger industry have been slow to adapt new technologies that would aid them in the process. READ MORE...

Old Power Stations Become Fabulous Green Assets, Reveals IDTechEx

Power stations are usually ugly. In addition, coal, oil, and gas power stations are turning out to be expensive write–offs for power companies, particularly facilities that are not very old. The new IDTechEx report, "Stationary Energy Storage Without Batteries: Grid, Microgrid, UPS, Trackside 2021-2041" has the answer – repurposing as energy storage. READ MORE...

The State of Intelligent Transportation in 2021

It's reported that road accidents kill approximately 1.3 million people and injure tens of millions more every year. It is imperative to leverage the advancements in various technologies including artificial intelligence (AI) to address this hidden, global epidemic. The use of V2X (vehicle-to-everything) enables communication between vehicles, as well as between vehicles and roadside communication systems for road safety. In fact, within three to five years, this will be a factory feature on almost every vehicle. In addition, various sensor technologies including cameras powered by AI are enabling transportation agencies to understand roadways better than ever before with applications ranging from accurate traffic counts to predicting spots on roads that are most prone to crashes. It's even predicted that the global intelligent transportation system (ITS) realm is expected to rise to an estimated value of over $63 billion by 2026. READ MORE...

Simplifying Stormwater Compliance

Stormwater management and compliance is necessary to meet often-changing — and sometimes challenging — regulations that serve to protect the environment and our natural resources. But compliance is often associated with confusion, reams of paper and disjointed processes that can lead to missteps and potential regulatory scrutiny or even fines. READ MORE...

Identifying and Implementing Project Controls in Design-Build Project Environments

Design-Build (D-B) is the nation's fastest growing project delivery method, with the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) noting that 44 percent of construction dollars spent on D-B projects in the U.S. Collaboration is key in D-B projects, with the designer and contractor working together as a team from procurement to closeout. The benefits are appealing: one combined team fosters teamwork and innovation, often leading to a higher-quality, more functional finished project. READ MORE...

Coming Soon: Practical BIM Implementation for Facility Management

In August, Civil + Structural Engineer Magazine will be debuting a series of articles titled Practical BIM Implementation for Facility Management.  This five-part series focuses on a new framework to improve BIM implementation throughout the entire lifecycle of a building.  This year's series will be authored by George Broadbent, Dr. Eve Lin, Dr. Jeff Chen, and Kai Yin.  This year's series focuses on a discussion about the traditional level of detail (LOD) in BIM management, and advocates for a move towards an AM/FM concept. READ MORE...

Digital Twins for Project Planning and Management: Key Considerations

Digital twins are increasingly being employed to facilitate more efficient planning, design, and construction of new projects, and they can improve operations of the facility post-construction, as well. Digital twins provide a high-fidelity digital replica of a physical asset and can serve as an intuitive display of the extensive data sets required for a project. They encompass not only the design and engineering aspects of the project, but also its physical environment, economic neighborhood, construction process, and utilization and performance once complete. READ MORE...

Foundations for Extremes

Join CHANCEĀ® for a two-part webinar to learn how extreme events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, storm surges, hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters often cause substantial damage to the foundation of existing structures that requires rapid response for repair. In some areas, recurring events produce repeating damage to traditional foundations of lightly loaded residential and commercial structures. Learn why helical piles are an attractive engineered solution that can be used to provide rapid high capacity load bearing characteristics in most geologic settings for both new foundations and remedial repair. register now!
