Missed an HSS webinar? STI's Webinars On Demand offers a library of topics on HSS, including our bolting to HSS, HSS splices, curved members, weld seams and more. You can also earn PDHs by taking the accompanying quiz.
Webinars On Demand: Buy Clean California and the Steel Supply Chain
STI and AISC hosted the "Buy Clean California and the Steel Supply Chain" webinar to provide clarity on the Buy Clean California Act and the changes in compliance requirements for publicly funded projects in California. This webinar on demand includes a Q&A session and a downloadable quick guide PDF.
Learning objectives include the various bolting techniques for HSS connections, how to use conventional bolts for HSS connections, recommended details and design examples for conventional bolted connections, and the U.S. companies that have proprietary, one-sided bolts. You can earn 1 PDH and receive a certificate of completion by purchasing and passing a quiz.
Jason Ericksen, SE, discusses methods for bolting to HSS members along with associated challenges and opportunities. He also shares valuable resources that delve into limit states that may apply to HSS members for the design of a bolted connection.
In this technical article, Dr. Jeffrey A. Packer discusses how standard, bolted, splice connections between HSS members are commonly achieved, how to move forward if the need for an invisible bolted splice connection arises, and more.
Business Conditions Strengthen Further at Architecture Firms
Business conditions remained robust at architecture firms in May with the ABI score climbing higher to 58.5 (a score over 50 indicates billings growth), which is one of the highest ever reported. Significant work in the pipeline, a high number of inquiries for new projects, and the value of new design contracts rising all contributed to the high score.
The 2020 report highlights shipments of domestic steel mills measuring 81 million net tons (NT), which is down 15.8% from 2019. U.S. raw steel production was 80.2 million NT, a 17.1%, which is a decrease from 2019. The report provides extensive coverage of the American steel industry along with selected statistical data on Canada, Mexico and world steel industries.
